The World's Gone Mad (For Marillion)

What a feeling! What a sight! Everywhere I look on Facebook I see Marillion Lyrics. I see People changing profile pictures - a colourful sea of Marillion art! I see people making new Marillion friends by the dozen. It's beautiful!

When I created the "Unofficial International "Marillion Lyric" status day" event on Facebook, I was expecting maybe a couple of hundred people would take part..... Then Marillion got wind of it and shared the info. 500 became 900 in an hour and went on to become 2100+

I would personally like to thank everybody for taking part in the event - you are spraying the words of Marillion on virtual walls all over the world.

I also wish to thank people for their countless messages of support and thanks. I've also made lots of new Marillion friends because of this event!

It shows what can be done when we work together!

Positive Vibes

Boy, yesterday was a great day.

Firstly, I completed my interview with Mark Wilkinson about his art and connection to Marillion. What a fantastic interview it is too. I've sent it to The Web Scandinavia and I'll post it on this blogg as soon as they have published it.

The Unofficial International "Marillion Lyric" status day event I started on Facebook had almost 500 people planning to take part yesterday. During the day I received a number of mails thanking me for "bringing fans together" by starting this event and quite a few friend requests from all corners of the planet. :)

In the evening, I sat in front of the TV with the wife watching "Mock the Week" just relaxing. Around 9pm I went online to check mail before bed. The Marillion event page had 780 people attending and was rising on every re-fresh. It turns out that Ian "the President" Mosley, Lucy Jordache and Marillion themselves had shared my event link on their Facebook pages and invited over 1000 more people to join us! I was not expecting that, but it put the most huge smile on my face!

This morning we have 1179 people taking part on this event and still over 1000 more invited to join in. This is way more than I had expected. Thanks to the Marillion camp for their involvement!

I wonder if we'll get 2000 people involved? There's still time :)

Yesterday The Web UK mag arrived packed full of reviews of the recent conventions. There's a fitting tribute to Facebook friend, Ale lover and fellow Marillion fan Richard "Ranger" Bruce who sadly pasted away a few days after the Montreal convention! I never met him in the flesh, but had many an online chat with him about Marillion and fine ales. He'll be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Alessandro Carmassi wrote a smashing review of the Convention in Port Zelande, including the highlight of his weekend when he sang Quartz with Marillion during Sunday's swap the band. There is also a fantastic "Montreal in pictures" section from the North American convention and a review of the UK convention by Kraig Elsdon. Plus tons of fantastic glossy pictures of the band in action.

Even Malcolm Harris gets a little section in the magazine where he talks about his 100 Marillion belt buckles he had made. He gave all the profit from this to a charity of Marillion's choice! Fantastic. I bought one from him in Holland and I'm wearing my "old style" Marillion logo buckle today Malcolm. One of only 50 of that design in the world. :)

If you aren't a member of The Web UK, I recommend you join! It's worth ever penny!

And finally, I spoke to Mark Wilkinson yesterday. Many of you may know that Mark is the artist that designed many of the early album and single covers for Marillion. Anyway, he's agreed to let me do a small interview with him which I will then pass on to The Web Scandinavia for their next magazine.

So all in all a good day! I even had time to listen to a few tracks from Fugazi when I came home :)

Facebook Event

Yesterday I created a Facebook Event - An international Marillion status day. I invited friends to join me on Thursday 30th June in posting a Marillion lyric as their status and changing profile picture to a Marillion album

Here is the link if you want to join us

156 people have already said they will take part, some of them have invited fiends too.

Then yesterday evening I posted that I had bought a 2CD edition of Anoraknophobia. This was the special "Pre-order" copy. One of my friends said he had a spare copy and would have given it to me if he had know. He will now give it to another FB friend of mine in Germany. This is heartwarming and very typical of the closeness of Marillion fans.

My positive frame of mind continues, the events of 2009 that made me so miserable (death in family, loss of job and moving house) seem to be a thing of the past. My daughter's recent visit may have been the icing on the cake. Still on a high from that.

My daughter re-awoke my love of record collecting and of course it's Marillion stuff I'm after. I've now almost completed my FRC collection, just missing the collectible FRC19. I've also got my eyes on one or two items on eBay :)

Have a great day folks :)

T-shirt of the day

I'm currently wearing a different Marillion t-shirt every day, photographing them and posting them Facebook. Hopefully I should be able to wear a different one every day until mid August before I have worn them all.

This Train is my life

I'm born and raised in Stoke-on-Trent England, moved to Sweden in 1994. First real musical memory I had was of playing a cassette of David Bowie's Station to Station over and over again in the mid 70's. Growing up in the 70's meant wearing shockingly bad clothes, flares and the charts were full of disco, soul and glam pop. First record bought on 7" was Judas Priest's Breaking the law (I think - it could have been Living after midnight). First Lp was either The Police "Regatta de Blanc" or ELO Greatest Hits Vol 2....

In my teens I listened to Ultravox, Japan, Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran and lots of other Electro pop of that era. Discovered Marillion after seeing them mime "Punch and Judy" on Top Of The Pop's circa 1984, became hooked when they released the singles from Misplaced Childhood which all charted highly. we had just got our first VHS recorder in 1984 and I do remember I recorded Marillion's Punch and Judy on TOTP. That tape has long since been recorded over. :(

First artist I started collecting was David Bowie. In the late 80's early 90's I became musically lost as I was completely obsessed with Kiss! God knows why as I can't stand them now.

Fell in love with Marillion all over again with the release of Holidays in Eden. Often considered to commercial by some fans, but I love it. It has too many gems on it to be discarded. Splintering Heart, The Party, Waiting to Happen and the "This Town" trilogy to name but 4.

In 2002, I discovered www.marillion.com and my Marillion OCD became permanent. I ordered everything I could get my hands on by the band. All the racket releases, T-shirts, car stickers etc. Really got into the run up to Marbles, Got all the versions of "You're Gone" and took part in the process that helped the band chart at no.7 in the UK. It was around this time that my wife also became completely hooked too :)

Was invited by Lucy to the Marbles listening party at Hardrock cafe, Stockholm. I met H and Rothers for the first time. An unbelievable evening. Saw the band live in Stockholm and Malmo May 12th and 13th 2004 (sadly, that was the last time the band played here) Met a guy called Johnny in Malmo and we have remained friends ever since due in part to our love of Marillion.

Saw Marillion in Oslo 2007 on the Somewhere Else tour and also was invited to a listening party for Somewhere else where I met and chatted with Pete :)

Since then I've seen the band on the Happiness tour and L=M both times in Norway Where we met the rest of the band. We attended our first convention in 2011 and made countless new friends. that was a magically weekend to say the least.

My daughter has just visited me here and she has renewed my love of record collecting. We traveled to a few cities and checked out record stores. There are advantages to being a Marillion fan in Sweden. If you come across a Marillion vinyl section in a record store, you can bet that your fingers will be the first that have touched those records in a long time. Which means that there is plenty to get hold off. Promos, bootlegs, Picture discs.

Spent the past couple of weeks tracking down items from ebay... Trying to complete my FRC collection and was lucky enough to get a copy of Brave on Vinyl. A very hard to get item.

Apart from Marillion, I'm a big fan of Pink Floyd, Sylvan, RPWL, Also Eden, The Reasoning, Porky Tree, Muse, Radiohead, Bowie and many more.

Favourite Marillion Album - Marbles
Favourite Marillion song - (Today anyway) This Strange Engine

Well, that's enough about me and my Marillion OCD..

A Classic Marillion Song

One of my Facebook friends just asked people to post Marillion songs we think she'll like. I posted Sugar Mice. It's one of my favourite Marillion tracks of the 80's and is taken from their best album with then frontman Fish.

check it out for yourselves!

A Marillion fan

Welcome to my blog. this is where I intend to write about my love of the UK band Marillion. I've been a fan since 1984 when I saw them on Top of The Pops. I love their music, collecting their records and love to be around other Marillion fans.

More coming soon!
